Where ATMs are usually found
- Leh: multiple bank ATMs around Main Bazaar, Fort Road and nearby areas. Queues and outages are common in peak season.
- Kargil: ATMs in the town centre and around Baroo.
- Diskit (Nubra): an ATM may be available, but it is not always reliable.
- Padum (Zanskar): limited ATM access. Verify before relying on it.
- Sankoo, Drass, Khaltse: limited. Do not rely on ATMs here.
- Changthang (Nyoma, Hanle, Pangong): generally no dependable ATM access.
Tips
- Withdraw enough cash in Leh or Kargil before you head to remote areas.
- Carry small notes. Homestays, camps and taxis often prefer cash.
- UPI works in many towns, but mobile network can be patchy. Do not rely on it everywhere.
- Some ATMs run out of cash on weekends and during festivals. Try another one or ask locally.
